Title: Classification, Labelling & GHS
Classification & Labelling
A Classification and labelling inventory will help promote harmonisation of different classifications of a substance. For substances with carcinogenic, mutagenic properties and those toxic for reproduction (CMRs) as well as respiratory sensitisers there may be a Community wide agreement on the classification by the authorities.
GHS
GHS is an acronym for the

ystem of classification and labelling of chemicals. The new system, whichaddresses classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling, transport and use of these chemicals. The GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national, regional and worldwide level, an important factor also for trade facilitation.
Consultation on the GHS proposal has taken place however a decision on the final wording of the system has yet to be released.
